So, who was this young queen who took the international circle by storm?
Maharani Gayatri Devi, born as Ayesha Begum, was a woman of regal grace and timeless elegance who left an indelible mark on Indian history. Born on May 23, 1919, in London, she belonged to the illustrious royal family of Cooch Behar, located in present-day West Bengal. Maharani Gayatri Devi married Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur, becoming the third wife and the Queen of Jaipur at the tender age of 21.
Beyond her glamorous image, Maharani Gayatri Devi was a woman of true substance and intellect. She played a pivotal role in the socio-political landscape of India. After the merger of princely states into the Indian Union, Gayatri Devi ventured into politics. She was elected as a Member of Indian Parliament twice where she represented her political party.
As if the above weren’t enough, she also trailblazed through a conservative society, advocating for girls’ education. She established the Maharani Gayatri Devi School in Jaipur, focusing on providing quality education to young women. Her efforts were instrumental in breaking traditional barriers and empowering girls to pursue academic excellence.
Even though she was the famous queen of Jaipur, her life was not without challenges.
